I am early in the art field. There're 2 paths in front of me: fine arts VS media arts. How do they compare?
I've always done fine arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics) and
have skills in that area only. However l am starting to hear more and more
that media arts is the job-getter. l love arts in general and actually am
starting to get very interested in the modern arts (design, computer arts,
etc...). But l do not have any skills. l am 18 and about to transfer to
either UCLA or USC in Fall 2010. l am so lost... could you please provide
me with some information and comparisons? Thank you very much.
I was a lot like you in regards to my art experience. I took
mostly fine arts in high school & that is what I enjoyed, but somewhere
along the way I became more interested in media arts, graphic design to be
more specific. I realized soon after that I really didn't like fine arts
nearly as much.
Don't go into media arts just because you think that is where the jobs are. You already said that you are starting to have an interest in media arts so do more research & test things out. Try out some graphic programs to see if that is what you really want to do. It seems to me that most of the jobs out there are in web design & not necessarily graphic design. You shouldn't worry about not having any skills; if you decide to go to college for some kind of media design then ur school will help you out in developing ur technical skills. Although, technical skills isn't necessarily enough to be successful. People with a true design sense, along with technical skills have a better chance of landing a job.
